Virginia Tech quarterback Grant Wells has been suspended indefinitely, the school announced on Wednesday. The reason for the suspension was not disclosed.
Wells is a redshirt sophomore who was expected to be the Hokies’ starting quarterback this season. He threw for 2,392 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 10 games last season.
In a statement, Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry said, “We are aware of the situation involving Grant Wells and have made the decision to suspend him indefinitely. We take all matters of conduct very seriously, and we will continue to gather information and monitor the situation.”
Wells’ suspension is a major blow to the Hokies. He was considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the ACC, and he was expected to lead the Hokies to a bowl game this season.
It is unclear who will start at quarterback for the Hokies in Wells’ absence. The Hokies have three other quarterbacks on their roster: redshirt junior Connor Blumrick, sophomore Tahj Bullock, and freshman Devin Farrell.
Brent Pry said freshman QB Pop Watson has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. #Hokies

Blumrick is the most experienced quarterback on the roster, but he has not started a game since 2021. Bullock and Farrell are both redshirt freshmen, and they have never played in a college game.
The Hokies open their season on September 3 against Old Dominion. It remains to be seen who will start at quarterback for the Hokies in that game.
Here are some additional details about the suspension:
- The suspension is reportedly due to an academic issue.
- Wells has a 2.0 GPA, which is the minimum requirement to be eligible to play.
- Wells is still enrolled at Virginia Tech, but he is not allowed to participate in any football activities.
- Wells is eligible to return to the team after he meets with the school’s academic staff and develops a plan to improve his grades.
It is important to note that Grant Wells is innocent until proven guilty. He has not been charged with any crime, and he has not had a chance to defend himself against the allegations against him.
