LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey underwent an unexpected heart procedure in June 2023, according to a report from ESPN’s Michael Voeple.

Mulkey had two stents put into a coronary artery that had 95-99% blockage. Mulkey had not experienced symptoms and had no idea she had any heart issues.

Mulkey said she “accidentally” found out about the blockage during a routine checkup. She had a little numbness on the tip of her finger and her doctor ordered an EKG.

“That led to a stress test and that led to a heart catheterization,” Mulkey said. “They found the blockage and they fixed it.”

Mulkey said she is feeling good now and is looking forward to the upcoming season. She said she is grateful to her doctors and nurses for taking care of her.

“I’m just so thankful that they found it and they fixed it,” Mulkey said. “I’m feeling great and I’m ready to get back to work.”

Mulkey is one of the most successful women’s basketball coaches in history. She has won three national championships, two at Baylor and one at Louisiana Tech. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Mulkey’s heart procedure is a reminder that heart disease can affect anyone, even people who are healthy and active. It is important to get regular checkups and to see a doctor if you experience any symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue.

Here are some of the reactions from the media and the public:

  • ESPN: “LSU coach Kim Mulkey undergoes unexpected heart procedure.”
  • CBS Sports: “LSU’s Kim Mulkey has heart procedure; ‘accidentally’ found issue.”
  • The Athletic: “LSU coach Kim Mulkey has heart procedure.”
  • Twitter: “#KimMulkey #LSU #HeartHealth”

This incident has sparked a debate about the importance of heart health. Some people believe that more needs to be done to educate people about heart disease and the importance of prevention. Others believe that people need to take more responsibility for their own health and make lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of heart disease.

It is important to remember that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. There are many things that people can do to reduce their risk of heart disease, such as eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking.
