The 2023 NFL season is just two weeks old, but it’s already been a rough start for all four quarterbacks who have played on Monday Night Football.
In Week 1, the Denver Broncos’ Russell Wilson threw for just 184 yards and two interceptions in a 27-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson was also sacked three times.
In Week 2, the Carolina Panthers’ Baker Mayfield threw for 194 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions in a 24-10 loss to the New York Giants. Mayfield was also sacked three times.
The New Orleans Saints’ Jameis Winston threw for 202 yards and one touchdown in a 6-3 loss to the Carolina Panthers, but he also threw two interceptions. Winston was also sacked once.
The Giants’ Daniel Jones threw for 199 yards and one touchdown in a 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers, but he also threw one interception. Jones was not sacked.
So, why have all four of these quarterbacks had such rough starts on Monday Night Football?

There are a few possible explanations. First, it’s important to remember that it’s still early in the season. All four of these quarterbacks are still trying to get adjusted to their new teams and new systems.

Second, all four of these quarterbacks have played against some tough defenses in the first two weeks of the season. The Seahawks, Giants, and Panthers all have top-10 defenses in the NFL.

Third, all four of these quarterbacks have made some mistakes. They’ve thrown interceptions, been sacked, and made some poor decisions.

However, it’s important to note that all four of these quarterbacks have also shown some flashes of brilliance. Wilson has made some incredible throws, Mayfield has shown his ability to make plays with his legs, Winston has shown his big-play ability, and Jones has shown his poise and maturity.
So, while it’s been a rough start for all four of these quarterbacks on Monday Night Football, there’s no need to panic yet. They’re all talented players, and they’re all capable of turning things around.
Here are some specific things that each quarterback can do to improve his performance:
- Russell Wilson: Wilson needs to be more careful with the football. He’s thrown four interceptions in two games, which is simply too many. He also needs to do a better job of protecting himself from pressure. He’s been sacked six times in two games, which is also too many.
- Baker Mayfield: Mayfield also needs to be more careful with the football. He’s thrown three interceptions in two games. He also needs to do a better job of making the right reads and decisions. He’s missed a few open receivers and made a few bad decisions that have led to turnovers.
- Jameis Winston: Winston also needs to be more careful with the football. He’s thrown three interceptions in two games. He also needs to do a better job of managing the game. He’s made a few questionable decisions, such as going for it on fourth down deep in his own territory when his team was down by multiple scores.
- Daniel Jones: Jones needs to be more consistent. He’s had some good moments, but he’s also had some bad moments. He needs to find a way to be more consistent throughout the game. He also needs to do a better job of protecting himself from pressure. He’s been sacked five times in two games.
If all four of these quarterbacks can make these improvements, they should be able to turn things around and start playing better football.
