Deion Sanders had a clear message for his Colorado Buffaloes players on Friday: don’t get complacent.
The Buffaloes are off to a 3-0 start to the season, including a stunning upset of No. 17 TCU in their last game. But Sanders knows that the Pac-12 is a tough conference, and he wants his players to stay focused on the task at hand.
“We can’t afford to get complacent,” Sanders said on Friday. “We have a long way to go, and we need to keep working hard. If we start to think that we’re better than we are, we’re going to get beat.”
Sanders’ message is especially important for a young team like Colorado. The Buffaloes have just 13 seniors on their roster, and many of their key players are underclassmen. Sanders knows that it’s important for his young players to stay focused and not get caught up in the hype.
“We have a lot of young players on this team,” Sanders said. “They’re talented, but they’re also inexperienced. I need them to understand that we need to keep working hard and getting better every day.”
Sanders’ message is also important for the Buffaloes because they have a tough schedule ahead of them. Colorado will play seven ranked teams in its remaining nine games, including No. 5 USC, No. 7 Oregon, and No. 10 Utah.
“We’re going to be tested every week,” Sanders said. “We need to be prepared for that. We need to be able to handle the adversity that comes with playing in the Pac-12.”
