ESPN college football analyst Robert Griffin III was criticized for making an on-air comment about Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart being lifted up by his teammates after a tackle.
During the broadcast of Ole Miss’ game against Kentucky on September 30, 2023, Griffin said that Dart was being lifted up by his teammates “like he was Jesus on the cross.”
The comment was immediately met with criticism on social media, with many people calling it disrespectful and insensitive.
“That comment was completely inappropriate and disrespectful,” one Twitter user wrote. “RGIII should be ashamed of himself.”
“I’m a Christian and I’m offended by RGIII’s comment,” another Twitter user wrote. “He should apologize.”
Griffin later apologized for the comment, saying that he did not mean to offend anyone.
“I apologize for my comment during the Ole Miss-Kentucky game,” Griffin said in a statement. “I did not mean to offend anyone. I was trying to make a comparison about how Dart was being protected by his teammates, but it was a poor comparison and I regret making it.”

Despite Griffin’s apology, many people were still upset by the comment. Some people called for ESPN to fire Griffin, while others said that he should be suspended for the rest of the season.

It is important to note that Griffin is a Christian himself. He has spoken publicly about his faith in the past, and he has said that it is an important part of his life.

It is unclear why Griffin made the comment, but it is possible that he was simply trying to make a comparison to something that would be familiar to his audience. However, the comparison was poorly chosen and it offended many people.

RG3 says things that are exclusively out of pocket. Never ends a game without saying something wild https://t.co/lVyRpHbAFy

Griffin’s comment is a reminder that it is important to be mindful of the words we use, even when we are not trying to be offensive. Our words can have a big impact on others, even if we don’t mean it.
