Team USA got off to a horrific start at the 2023 Ryder Cup, losing the first four matches of the day to fall behind Europe 4-0.
The Americans were simply outplayed by their European counterparts, who were more aggressive and made fewer mistakes. In the first match of the day, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry defeated Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele 4&3. McIlroy and Lowry were dominant from the start, and they never gave Cantlay and Schauffele a chance to get back into the match.
In the second match, Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia defeated Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas 3&2. Rahm and Garcia were also dominant, and they took advantage of several mistakes by Scheffler and Thomas.
In the third match, Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland defeated Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa 2&1. Fitzpatrick and Hovland were the more consistent team, and they made fewer mistakes than Koepka and Morikawa.
In the fourth and final match of the day, Luke Donald and Tommy Fleetwood defeated Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson 2&1. Donald and Fleetwood were the more aggressive team, and they took advantage of several mistakes by Spieth and Johnson.

The 4-0 deficit is the largest for Team USA after the first day of the Ryder Cup since 1981. The Americans will need to come out fighting on Saturday if they want to have any chance of winning the Cup back.
