Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about tight end Travis Kelce’s two penalties during the team’s Week 2 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kelce was flagged for taunting and unnecessary roughness, and Reid said that he spoke to Kelce about the penalties after the game.
“I talked to Travis,” Reid said. “He knows that he can’t do that stuff. He’s a great player, and he’s a great leader, but he’s also a very competitive guy. And sometimes, that competitiveness gets the best of him. But he knows that he can’t do that stuff, and he’s going to work on it.”
Reid also said that he believes Kelce’s penalties are a result of his passion for the game.
“Travis is a very passionate player,” Reid said. “He loves the game of football, and he loves his teammates. And sometimes, that passion gets the best of him. But he’s a good kid, and he’s going to learn from his mistakes.”
Kelce himself apologized for the penalties after the game.
“I got to be smarter,” Kelce said. “I can’t let my emotions get the best of me. I know that I’m a leader on this team, and I have to set a good example. I’m going to learn from this, and I’m going to be better next time.”
Kelce’s penalties were costly for the Chiefs, as they resulted in 30 yards in lost yardage and two first downs for the Jaguars. But Reid said that he believes Kelce will learn from his mistakes and be better moving forward.
