Jared Goff confronted Ryan Fitzpatrick after the Lions’ 34-20 win over the Packers on Thursday Night Football, September 29, 2023. Goff took issue with a pregame comment Fitzpatrick made on Amazon Prime Video, where he called Goff a “poor man’s Matt Ryan.”
“I hope it’s up to your standards,” Goff said to Fitzpatrick. “I didn’t know I was a poor man’s anything, but it’s okay.”
Goff’s comments drew a round of “OOOOHHs” from the group, and he then told Fitzpatrick he was joking and just giving him a hard time. “Matt Ryan is a hell of a player. I’m giving you a hard time,” Goff said. “I appreciate it, man.”
Fitzpatrick tried to save face by saying Ryan, who is currently not playing for any team, is a “pretty good player.” Goff agreed that Ryan is a “hell of a player” before telling Fitzpatrick he was just giving him “a hard time.”
The exchange between Goff and Fitzpatrick was lighthearted, but it also highlighted the competitive nature of the NFL and the pressure that players face to perform at a high level. Goff is no exception. He was traded to the Lions from the Los Angeles Rams last offseason, and he is looking to prove himself with his new team.
Goff’s performance against the Packers was a step in the right direction. He threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns, and he did not turn the ball over. His performance was especially impressive in the second half, when he led the Lions on three consecutive scoring drives to come back from a 14-point deficit.

After the game, Goff said that he is confident in his abilities and that he is focused on helping the Lions win games. He also said that he does not take Fitzpatrick’s comment personally.
“I’m not going to let anyone’s opinion of me define me,” Goff said. “I’m going to continue to work hard and try to be the best player I can be.”
Goff’s performance against the Packers was a strong start to the season, and it showed that he is capable of leading the Lions to victory. If he can continue to play at a high level, he will prove that he is not a “poor man’s Matt Ryan.” He is his own player, and he is ready to make his mark on the NFL.
